Every four years, the government presents an action plan for climate policy outlining how to achieve climate goals. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency supports the government with data and analysis. The first climate action plan is expected to be presented by the government in 2019. The EU and its member states are individually responsible for ratifying the Paris Agreement. There was a strong preference for the EU and its 28 Member States to simultaneously table their ratification instruments to ensure that neither the EU nor its Member States commit to obligations that belong exclusively to the other and there was concern that there was a disagreement over each Member State`s share of the EU-wide reduction target. just as Britain`s vote to leave the EU could delay the Paris pact. However, on 4 October 2016, the European Parliament approved the ratification of the Paris Agreement and the EU tabled its ratification instruments on 5 October 2016 with several EU Member States. “The EU can become a model for combating climate change through green stimulus measures after the coronavirus crisis, setting an ambitious climate target for 2030, in line with the 1.5oC limit, and a good implementation and development of its green agreement.” In 2017, Sweden adopted a new climate policy framework. The framework consists of a climate law, climate targets and a climate council.
Sweden`s long-term goal is to have zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 at the latest. “Even if all countries were as committed as current leaders, this would still not be enough to prevent dangerous climate change,” says the 2021 Climate Change Performance Index report. Therefore, even those such as Sweden, the United Kingdom and Denmark, which have been ranked at a high level, would have “no reason to relax”. The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that deals with the reduction, adaptation and financing of greenhouse gas emissions from 2020. The agreement aims to address the threat of global climate change by keeping global temperatures well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels this century and to continue efforts to further limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The Climate Action Council should also contribute to a more intensive debate within society on climate policy. But it could stumble if it “pursues greenwashing” instead of setting serious climate change targets, he adds. On 6 March 2015, Sweden announced its contribution to global action on climate change. The original INDC is available on the UNFCCC website.
The main characteristics of the NDCs are: these results were presented in the Climate Change Performance Index (CICC), an annual report that traces the situation of the world`s largest polluters in managing the climate crisis. The 57 countries classified by country are responsible for nearly 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions. There are, however, a few countries in the bloc that have been outliers when it comes to climate progress. Hungary and Poland were among the lowest, not least because they still have rising emissions. The Czech Republic is also lagging behind. Overall, the EU has worked well compared to others, rising from 22nd place last year to 16th place in the 2021 ranking. This is “almost exclusively” of the view that the recently implemented climate policy is better evaluated by experts. A climate action group will ensure that the government`s policy is in line with climate targets. The CLIMATIC GROUP is an interdisciplinary group of experts tasked with independently assessing the compatibility of the government`s overall policy with national policy objectives.
